The Samuel G. Roberson, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

The Samuel G. Roberson, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was founded with the purpose of giving Howard University Department of Theatre Arts students the opportunity to further their education and foster artistic growth. The scholarship is need/merit based and open to currently enrolled full-time students majoring in Theatre Arts (Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre, Technical Theatre, Theatre Arts Administration) possessing the following criteria:

 

  • Must be a rising Junior or Senior and in good standing

  • Applicants should be well-rounded and show initiative within their major, including but not limited to student-run productions and/or events

  • Applicants should possess leadership qualities, serving as a role model amongst their peers and within the Department

  • Applicants should be active both in and outside of the Department (through outside work within their field, community involvement, or campus organizations)

  • During their time in the Department, the applicants should show growth both as a developing artist as well as academically
     

The Sammy Scholarship award can be applied towards the following:
 

Tuition

-OR-

To offset the cost of a summer program or semester abroad (i.e.: BADA, RADA)

-OR-

Summer housing for an artistic internship or program that will benefit the student and his/her trajectory as a professional artist.

 

Application Requirements DUE APRIL 7, 2025 AT 11:59 PM

  • A completed application

  • An Expense Report/Budget of program costs

  • A recent professional headshot

  • Submit an essay (written or video) showcasing how you meet the scholarship criteria, your plans for utilizing the award, its impact on your artistic growth, and why you are the deserving recipient. Highlight your theatre/dance practice throughout to address each prompt. Video submissions must include footage of you practicing your artistic discipline. Please articulate how the scholarship will support your development, and explain why you are the ideal candidate. Be creative! Applicants should weave their personal narratives, aspirations, and plans for the scholarship into their essays. For applicants submitting a video, it may not exceed five minutes and should be of the highest quality possible, with a resolution of at least 1920 x 1080. (16:9, minimum 1080p). Mobile device videos should be shot horizontally, not vertically.
